LG brings the QWERTY keypad to young consumers

The KS360's sliding QWERTY keypad and high-spec messaging features mean that users can send SMS, IM, email and have the ability to access social networking sites all from one device. In addition, the KS360 comes with touchscreen dialling, a 2MP camera and MicroSD card slot.

"With the popularity of social networking sites and instant messaging amongst younger audiences, the KS360 has been designed so they can access these features when away from their computer. This handset is perfect for this segment of the market. Its vibrant colours, easy-to-use QWERTY keypad and fantastic messaging features offer users a simple and fun device that will enable them to communicate with each other instantly," says Newing.

Meet tomorrow's mobile phones

Nokia's Morph
concept phone -- probably 7 to 15 years away -- will be made of flexible materials that let it morph from traditional mobile phone shape to bracelet and back

The Handphone, designed by Biodomotica's Massimo Marrazzo, makes use of the familiar "call me" gesture.

The P-Per concept phone from the Chocolate Agency has a touch screen on both sides, as if someone glued two iPhones together.

The tiny Packet concept phone, designed by Emir Rifat Isik, folds open to reveal a split keyboard and a screen for viewing e-mail, Web browsing and more.

A haptic display with millions of tiny pins on the surface is being developed by Japan's NHK Broadcasting Corp. Eventually the technology could be used on cell phone displays to mimic the tactile feel of a mechanical keyboard.

Force sensors at the corners of devices, under development at Microsoft Research Cambridge, could allow users to turn a phone on and off by squeezing or pulling it, or advance a Web page by twisting the device.

The Atlas Kinetic concept phone, designed by Ricardo Baiao of DesignerID, is self-powered: It has a built-in series of weights, rotors and springs that generate power whenever the phone is shaken or moved. That power, in turn, runs a generator that charges the battery.

Mozilla Sets New Guinness World Record with Firefox 3 Downloads

Massive grassroots community effort behind world record for most software downloads in 24 hours

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – July 2, 2008 – Mozilla today announced it set a new Guinness World Record for the largest number of software downloads in 24 hours. The record-setting 8,002,530 downloads coincided with the launch of Firefox® 3, Mozilla’s major update to its popular and acclaimed free, open source Web browser.

Mozilla enthusiasts worldwide drove more than 1.7 million pledges to download Firefox 3 on Download Day, hosted regional download “fests,” and informed more than 43 million people through hosting Download Day affiliate buttons online. The global Mozilla community has been celebrating the historic goal of establishing a Guinness World Record with parties in more than 25 countries, including a 24-hour long download fest celebration called Camp Firefox at Mozilla’s Mountain View headquarters.

“The enthusiasm and creativity of Firefox fans was instrumental in achieving this record,” said Paul Kim, VP of Marketing at Mozilla. “Our community members came together and not only spread the word, but also took the initiative to help mobilize millions of people to demonstrate their belief that Firefox gives people the best possible online experience.”

“As the arbiter and recorder of the world’s amazing facts, Guinness World Records is pleased to add Mozilla’s achievement to our archives,” said Gareth Deaves, Records Manager for Guinness World Records. “Mobilizing over 8 million internet users within 24 hours is an extremely impressive accomplishment and we would like to congratulate the Mozilla community for their hard work and dedication.”

Virtualization and Consolidation with Micosoft Hyper-V

Hyper-V, a key feature of Windows Server 2008, has now released to manufacturing (RTM) and is available for deployment into production environments. A beta of Hyper-V was included with Windows Server 2008 and this update provides the final release.

Server virtualization, also known as hardware virtualization, is a hot topic in the IT world because of the potential for serious economic benefits. Server virtualization enables multiple operating systems to run on a single physical machine as virtual machines (VMs). With server virtualization, you can consolidate workloads of underutilized server machines onto a smaller number of fully utilized machines. Fewer physical machines can lead to reduced costs through lower hardware, energy, and management overhead, plus the creation of a more dynamic IT infrastructure. To learn more about Microsoft and virtualization, please visit the Virtualization Web site, or the Virtualization TechCenter.

With Windows Server 2008, everything needed to support server virtualization is available as an integral feature of the operating system as Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V. With Hyper-V as a role, plus flexible licensing policies, it's now easier than ever to take advantage of the cost savings of virtualization through Windows Server 2008:

Microsoft has now released the final version of Hyper-V, which is now available for download. You can download the update for Hyper-V RTM here and experience the improved stability, usability and performance. more...
