Nikon Capture NX 2, Powerful Tools for Quick and Easy Photo Editing

TOKYO – Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the introduction of the exciting new Capture NX 2 photo editing software. An evolution of the original award-winning Capture NX software released in 2006, Capture NX 2 makes it even easier to make quick and powerful photographic edits so you can spend more time making photographs and less time editing them on the computer.

The original Capture NX software introduced the world to direct on-image editing. This revolutionary new development was the basis of the Color Control Point tool which enabled photographers of all levels to easily adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, color and warmth on specific elements of a picture such as sky, skin, grass, etc. This made it possible to choose any area of a photograph for editing without the need for complicated selections or masking techniques.

Capture NX 2 introduces the all-new Selection Control Point tool, which allows users to carry out nearly any image adjustment to a specific area with just a point-and-click to make the selection. Whether applying an Unsharp Mask to just the eyes in a portrait, a Gaussian Blur to only the background of a photograph or D-Lighting to open up the shadows, the Selection Control Point makes it easy to do. What once was a complex and tedious task now takes just a fraction of the time.

The newly developed Auto Retouch Brush allows you to simply apply a few mouse strokes to clear away spots, blemishes or other unwanted distractions that appear in a picture. Photographers can quickly and effectively achieve the results they are looking for without having to learn all new methods and skills.

The Capture NX 2 interface has been updated by adding "Workspaces" to optimize the screen layout. Four preset Workspaces such as "Browser" and "Edit" can be selected as well as a number of user-defined workspaces that optimize single or multiple monitors for the ideal screen layout. The Edit List has been reorganized to allow easier access to most settings. Further, it maximizes the picture display area while simplifying the editing process by allowing multiple edits to be viewed simultaneously.

With this range of impressive tools many shooters will find Capture NX 2 to be a great stand-alone photo editing solution, while others will discover that it’s a remarkably effective addition to their existing photographic editing workflow and process. more...

Encrypt your SWF with Amayeta SWF Encrypt 5.0

SWF Encrypt™ 5.0 encrypts your Adobe Flash® SWF files, protecting them from the most popular Flash Decompiler Tools on the market. Secure your ActionScript today and prevent SWF Reverse Engineering and Decompiling.
Amayeta first launched SWF Encrypt in 2005, where it received mass acclaim for being the first mainstream encryption tool for Flash. SWF Encrypt 5.0 builds upon the advanced obfuscation Techniques along side proven encryption technology to further protect and secure Flash ActionScript Code, which now includes protection for Flash 9, ActionScript 3.0 SWF Files.

ActionScript is the programming language used for scripting Adobe Flash movies and applications, referred to as SWF Files. The Adobe SWF File Format is an "Open File Format" which means there is no native protection and the contents of the SWF file can be viewed using Flash Decompiler Tools. These tools break open the resources that make up a SWF file and can display the full ActionScript Source Code. SWF Encrypt 5.0 shields ActionScript from Flash Decompilers and SWF hackers by encrypting and obfuscating the SWF whilst retaining its original functionality.

In addition to SWF Encrypt 5.0, Amayeta have also released SWC Encrypt 2.0, a major update to the industries first Encryption Tool for Flash Component Files. Built on the same Encryption Platform as SWF Encrypt 5.0, SWC Encrypt 2.0 also works with ActionScript 3.0 Flash SWC Files.

“SWF Encrypt 5.0 and SWC Encrypt 2.0 are the first ActionScript 3.0 obfuscators on the market” said Simon Yang, Software Architect at Amayeta, “The AS3 format differs greatly from previous versions of Flash, so we've worked really hard with this update. We'll continue to improve and optimize the engine even more over the coming months.”

SWF Encrypt 5.0 and SWC Encrypt 2.0 are both available now for Windows and Mac OSX. Pricing is $125 for a single license, per product. Education, government, and volume pricing is available. To learn more about purchasing options, or to download the trial versions, visit http://www.amayeta.com

Firefox claims download success

Mozilla is claiming a download record for the release of Firefox 3.0.

In the first 24 hours the web browser was available the software was downloaded more than eight million times, says its creator Mozilla.

Statistics from the download servers are being scrutinised to produce an official figure that will be passed to the Guinness World Record organisation.

But the launch was marred by news from computer security firms who have found the first flaws in the software.

Big figures

The attempt to set the download record was scheduled to begin at 1300 PST (2000 GMT) on 17 June.

However, the record attempt was almost wrecked from the start as the servers handling the downloads collapsed under the weight of visitors checking to see if new version was available.

Once the servers were up and functioning normally the record attempt began.

At their busiest the servers were handling more than 9,000 downloads per minute. Within five hours the number of downloads for Version 3.0 exceeded the 1.6 million set by Firefox 2.0 in October 2006.

In total Firefox 3.0 was downloaded 8.3 million times over the 24 hour record setting period. The figure beats the five million Mozilla predicted before the day.

Logs from the download servers have been handed to the Open Source Labs at Oregon State University for auditing. The scrutiny will ensure duplicate and unfinished downloads are not counted. The verification process could take a week to complete.

The surge of interest in Firefox 3.0 has continued and Mozilla has reported that the software has now been downloaded more than 10 million times.

However, some of the shine of the launch was removed by reports that a security firm had already found a flaw in the browser.

DV Labs/Tipping Point reported a flaw only five hours after Firefox 3.0 debuted. The flaw potentially lets an attacker take over a PC if a user clicks on a booby-trapped link.

NVIDIA Tesla Computing Solutions now with the world's first teraflop parallel processor

NEW NVIDIA TESLA DOUBLES THE PERFORMANCE FOR THOUSANDS OF CUDA DEVELOPERS WORLDWIDE
NVIDIA Tesla® and CUDA™ Technologies Together Deliver a Complete Computing Solution for the Entire HPC Industry

From video encoding to oil and gas exploration and from medical imaging to scientific research, thousands of CUDA developers in the high performance computing (HPC) community are leveraging a revolutionary GPU computing platform that was announced just one year ago. With over 60,000 downloads of the C-compiler to date, the combination of CUDA™ and Tesla® technologies have been the foundation for industry changing applications, making it the most rapidly adopted GPU computing technology platform in the HPC community.

“GPU Computing is coming at a time when we are running out of gas for time-critical forecasts on conventional clusters,” says National Center of Atmospheric Research’s John Michalakes, lead software developer for the Weather Research & Forecasting Model “We aim to cut the time for a forecast by at least a factor of two as we incorporate NVIDIA’s GPU computing technology into more of WRF. I expect the affect of accelerators in weather and climate modeling will be transformative.”

This year at the International Supercomputing Conference, NVIDIA Corporation, the leader in GPU technologies, has strengthened the CUDA and Tesla technology platforms with the introduction of its second-generation platform, the new Tesla 10 series computing solutions. Binary compatible and supporting the industry standard language of C, the new products enable developers to solve their computational challenges in a common and familiar development environment that scales effortlessly from one generation to the next with no re-coding required.

“The path to great discovery is filled with many challenges and for today's scientists, engineers and researchers, in fields such as drug research, seismic exploration or medical science, one of the biggest challenges is computation,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO of NVIDIA. “The GPU is taking high performance computing in a fundamentally new direction. Now, hundreds of processor cores are able to work together to give scientists and engineers massive jumps in performance, while dramatically reducing the footprint in their datacenter.”

The new Tesla product family includes the Tesla S1070 1U computing system and the Tesla C1060 computing processor and delivers:

  • Double the performance: up to 4 Teraflops per 1U system
  • Double precision: IEEE 754 arithmetic support
  • Double the memory: with 16 Gigabytes of memory per 1U system
  • Up to 3x the power efficiency: for a more efficient computing environment

“As a world leader of derivatives, BNPParibas is constantly investing in research for more efficient financial calculations. To this end, we are currently conducting research on the use of GPUs to speed up options processing and early access to the new NVIDIA Tesla products has been highly beneficial. These experiments, done with ANEO consulting firm, delivered very promising results with impressive performance speedup and exceptional accuracy. NVIDIA Tesla computing products, which offers IEEE 754 double precision compliance, is also a very important step forward for us,” declares Stephane Tyc, BNPParibas Global Head of Equities & Derivates Quantitative Research.

When combined with the award-winning CUDA C-language development software for parallel computing, the new Tesla products extend the reach of GPUs to any computationally intensive applications requiring double precision accuracy. To date, over 70 million CUDA enabled GPUs have been sold into the market and over 60,000 downloads of the C-compiler have been recorded through the community Web site, CUDA Zone, which is located at www.nvidia.com/cuda. As a result, developers across a wide variety of fields including financial analysis, astrophysics and seismic imaging are leveraging NVIDIA’s CUDA development tools. These developers can now simply parallelize their software and exploit the GPU’s parallel computing architecture to automatically distribute computing work to hundreds of processor cores.

“CUDA has allowed us to tap into the processing power of the GPU with tremendous ease, saving us time and money,” says Jim Hardwick, Senior Software Engineer at Techniscan. “A single host system and two Tesla D870s are considerably cheaper than the 16-core cluster. This is significant not only for production and sales, but also reduces research and development costs in engineering.”

“Using only 12 GPUs, Volera is capable of analyzing the entire U.S. options market, in real time, with latencies of less than 10 milliseconds,” says Gerald A. Hanweck, Jr., founder and principal partner of Hanweck Associates. “That sort of result would usually require at least 60 traditional 1U servers. By using NVIDIA GPU technology, our clients are able to see better results while saving maintenance costs, with lower power consumption, and a smaller real-estate footprint.”

The Tesla S1070 1U computing system and Tesla C1060 computing processor board will be available for purchase for $7999 and $1699 respectively. These products are sampling today and will ship in August 2008.

Run Windows Software on Linux with Wine 1.0

After a mere 15 years of development the Wine team yesterday announced the release of Wine 1.0, the first full official release. Wine, however, is already in widespread use in the Linux community and has been for most of its 15-year development.

For those not in the know, Wine allows a wide range of Windows applications to be run on Linux without needing to install Microsoft’s operating system.

Wine is not an emulator so much as a Linux replacement for core Windows components needed to run applications from that platform.

Despite the 15-year development cycle, the Wine team said in its announcement that compatibility in 1.0 may not be “perfect yet”. But the good news is that “thousands of applications have been reported to work very well”.

To see see what applications can be run using Wine see http://appdb.winehq.org.

The source code for Wine 1.0 can be found at:

Firefox 3 'Download Day' cripples Mozilla site

Mozilla's big plan on Tuesday to set a world record for downloads with the Firefox 3 browser hit a snag when its Web site would not work properly.

Though the big "Download Day" was set to begin at 1 p.m. ET, Mozilla's Web site was down or working sporadically all morning on the East Coast, and users still could not download Firefox 3 from the site more than an hour later.

A Firefox spokeswoman said via e-mail just after 2 p.m. that the company was aware of the problem and "working to get it back up quickly."

Mozilla also outlined the problems it was having with its Web site in a blog entry.

"The outpouring of interest and enthusiasm around Firefox 3 has been overwhelming (literally!). Our servers are currently feeling the burn and should be back to normal shortly. Download day will officially commence once the site goes live. The 24 hours period will be clocked from that moment. Thanks for your continued support."

Toshiba Portégé R500-S5007V, the World's First Laptop with 128GB Solid State Drive

With seven worlds first technologies the Portégé R500 series has served as a technology launching pad and redefined the ultraportable marketplace with its worlds first technologies and green attributes, such as a transreflective LED backlit indoor/outdoor viewing display, the industrys highest rated EPEAT Gold laptop and Energy Star 4.0 compliance, said Jeff Barney, general manager and vice president, Digital Products Division, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. First to incorporate a 128GB solid state drive is another major accomplishment for Toshiba and illustrates how the company is committed to delivering solutions that meet the needs of our customers.

Utilizing the industrys largest solid state drive capacity of 128GB, Toshibas Portégé R500-S5007V provides ample storage space for carrying critical company data and sensitive personal data while traveling. With no moving parts, SSD technology provides customers with an enhanced level of reliability, durability and system responsiveness.

To provide added convenience and on-the-go productivity, the Portégé R500 series was the worlds first laptop to ship with a 7mm DVD SuperMulti drive. The built-in optical drive reduces the Portégé R500-S5007Vs travel weight by providing users with an all-in-one solution, eliminating the bulk and inconvenience of carrying additional drives and cables.

For enhanced outdoor viewing, the Portégé R500 series incorporates the worlds first widescreen 12.1-inch transreflective LED backlit display, a feature that embraces the variety of lighting scenarios in which laptop computers are used including direct sunlight. Indoors, the LED backlit display produces an image rich in color saturation and superb quality. Outdoors, the transreflective screen lets the suns light pass through and reflects it out to bring the images on the display to life so users can switch off the LED backlighting while outdoors and decrease overall battery consumption. This feature also makes the Toshiba Portégé R500 series an ideal choice for environmentally conscious users. This innovative display technology also enables users to expand their mobile computing boundaries beyond the traditional four walls of their office, home or local coffee shop to include locations with direct sunlight.

Measuring as thin as 0.77-inches, the Portégé R500 series uses Toshibas proprietary High Density Mounting Technology process to enable dual-sided motherboard component mounting. This innovative technology produces a motherboard that is one-third the size of a mainstream 15.4-inch notebooks motherboard, while still providing users the same functionality.

The more than eight hours of battery life(3) of the Portégé R500-S5007V gives users a full work day of normal computing on a single charge. To achieve this extended computing life, Toshiba subjected key system components to meticulous energy efficiency evaluation. Key Portégé R500-S5007V components use low power consumption technology including both the 128GB SSD and an ultra low voltage processor.

For executive durability and security, the Portégé R500-S5007V incorporates Toshibas EasyGuard Technology(4) including advanced encryption, multiple level passwords and a fingerprint reader. These innovative features help prevent theft, and protect against unauthorized access to the user's system, helping keep confidential information secure. In terms of data protection, the elimination of all mechanical moving parts from the hard drive further enhances the level of reliability and durability.

Graphics Evolves Beyond Gaming With New NVIDIA Geforce Gtx 200 GPUs

SANTA CLARA, CA—JUNE 16, 2008—Imagine instead of taking over five hours to convert a video for your iPod, it only takes 35 minutesi. Imagine using your PC to simulate protein folding to help find a cure for debilitating diseases. Imagine that your PC can dramatically accelerate everyday tasks, and deliver an exciting visual experience in the process. Today that imagination becomes a reality now that the leader in visual computing technologies, NVIDIA (Nasdaq: NVDA), has introduced its new family of GeForce® GTX 200 graphics processors (GPUs)—which includes the GeForce GTX 280 and GeForce GTX 260 GPUs—taking graphics beyond gaming and gaming beyond anything that’s ever been possible before on a consumer computing platform.

“The advances NVIDIA continues to make in visual computing are simply incredible, and we are excited to be one of the first companies in the world to offer the technology in the new Exhilaration Edition of the award-winning HP Blackbird 002,” said Rahul Sood, chief technology officer, HP Voodoo Business Unit. “Exceptional graphics quality and performance is important to our customers, and now the GeForce GTX 200 GPUs are bringing something else into the mix. By using the GPU to enhance everyday applications such as video encoding and manipulating photos, HP Blackbird 002 is one of the most cutting-edge PC platforms ever designed.”

Graphics Beyond Gaming
One of the most powerful processors in the PC is the GPU. Rendering 3D images in real-time is just about the most mathematically intensive task your PC will ever undertake, but it’s not the only one. As PC applications become increasingly visual, many ordinary tasks will benefit from the graphics horsepower provided by the GPU, including encoding and playing high-definition videos, editing photos, getting driving directions off the Internet, or simply running a new operating system like Windows Vista.

“Millions of users around the world know how time consuming it is to convert their home videos for use on video sharing sites such as YouTube or for downloading to popular media players such as the iPod,” said Sam Blackman, CEO of Elemental Technologies. “Elemental has developed the BadaBOOM™ Media Converter, a consumer video application scheduled for release in August. By taking advantage of the massively parallel, general-purpose computing architecture of a GeForce GPU, we are able to transcode high-quality video 18 times faster than with CPU-only implementations. This unprecedented performance scaling is the reason why we have made sure that our RapiHDTM Video Platform takes advantage of NVIDIA GPUs.”

By recognizing that the value of a GPU transcends gaming, an increasing number of applications are also being written that use the GPU for straight, non-graphical computational tasks. For example, Stanford University’s distributed computing computational program Folding@Home, combines the computing horsepower of millions of consumer GPUs to simulate protein folding to help find cures for diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. With the computing processing power of the GeForce GTX family, applications such as Folding@Home and others can run upwards of 140 times faster on an NVIDIA general-purpose parallel processor than on some of today’s traditional CPUs.

“GeForce GPUs will soon deliver the biggest boost in processing power we’ve seen in the history of Folding@Home,” said Vijay Pande, Associate Professor of Chemistry, Stanford University. “The GeForce GTX 280 GPU runs Folding@Home 45 times faster than the latest 3GHz Core2 Quad CPU. If just one percent of the world’s GeForce 8- and 9-Series GPUs ran Folding@Home, we would have 70 petaflops of processing power to help find cures for disease. That’s 10 times more processing power than the world’s top 100 supercomputers combined.”

Gaming That’s Beyond
The CUDA general-purpose parallel processing mode will usher in a new generation of ultra realistic games. Developers can use the supercomputing power of the “CUDA Computing” mode to simulate realistic, physically accurate effects then render beautiful images using the “GeForce GPU” mode. NVIDIA GPUs are also the only ones to support PhysX™ technology, the world’s most pervasive physics engine that is already delivering dynamic 3D realism to more than 140 games across multiple platforms, and is being used by more than 25,000 developers worldwide. With PhysX, developers can incorporate effects such as rigid body dynamics, collision detection, and cloth simulation that dramatically change the way the games are played and how the on-screen stories unfold, and then accelerate those effects using the processing power of the GPU.

“I haven't been this excited about a new gaming technology in years,” said Chris Taylor, CEO and founder of Gas Powered Games. “We're focusing all of our physics efforts on PhysX, and it already delivers the kinds of advanced effects in Space Siege that takes the whole experience to the next level. And in the near-future, you're going to see real-time, Hollywood cinematic-level environmental effects on GPUs like the GeForce GTX 280. We're talking about some wicked-cool technology here!”

Sony Ericsson S302 and F305 appear earlier

Tuesday, June 17th, will be an interesting day for Sony Ericsson. Two of the phones the Swedish-Japanese company will announce have been leaked — mobile gaming focused - F305 and quick shooter - S302.

Touted as the company's first motion gaming enabled phone (even though the W910i and K850i also have built-in accelerometers), the F305 is the quad-band GSM + EDGE handset. It has dedicated gaming buttons around its 2-inch 176×220 screen, and loud stereo speakers on the back to make the gaming experience more enjoyable. There's also Bluetooth support, 2 megapixel camera, Memory Stick Micro (M2) slot, FM radio, music player with TrackID support. Three games come pre-loaded with the device - Bowling, Bass fishing, and Jockey. The Sony Ericsson F305 is a low-to-mid range device, measuring 96×47x14.6 mm and weighing 97.5 grams. It will be available in "select markets" in Q3 2008, in "Polar White" and "Mystic Black."

On the other hand, the quad-band GSM+EDGE Sony Ericsson S302 will be sold as an affordable camera phone. It has the same screen as the F305, and also comes with Bluetooth support, FM Radio, 2 megapixel camera and memory card slot. The S302 is the first device in the new Sony Ericsson's series - Snapshot. It measures 101×46x11, weighs 79 grams and will be available in "Thunder Grey" and "Crystal Blue" in Q4 this year.

In addition to new phones, the Sony Ericsson will also unveil new Bluetooth headsets - HBH-PV-715, HBH-PV-720 (supports StyleUp covers) and HBH-PV-740 (features a status display).

The S302 stands at only 11mm thickness and weighs the mere 79g. It's got a TFT display with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels.

Sony Ericsson are in for a major announcement next week - leaked phones are already piling up by the day. We even expect that the Sony Ericsson P5 will be announced along too.

Today's leaked handsets are Sony Ericsson S302 (the so-called Snapshot series according to the internal Sony Ericsson naming convention) and Sony Ericsson F305 (a new portable gaming series).

Sony Ericsson S302 is quad-band GSM/EDGE device with a 2 megapixel camera (no autofocus here). There's also a LED photo flash and the PhotoFix application. The Sony Ericsson S302 is obviously a lower-midrange handset and you can't expect much from it. You also get 20MB of onboard memory, Memory Stick Micro card slot, Bluetooth (A2DP), USB and FM radio.

The Sony Ericsson S302 is set to be available in Q4 in Thunder Grey and Crystal Blue colors. Official announcement is expected on June 17th. There's no pricing information yet.

The Sony Ericsson F305 is again a quad-band GSM/EDGE device. Obviously being a gaming-oriented device it features a built-in accelerometer and three pre-installed games: Bowling, Bass fishing and Jockey. Bowling for example is played by simply swinging the handset as if you are to throw a bowling ball. We wonder how many of you will end up throwing the handset as well? Some of the games can be played in multiplayer mode via Bluetooth. There are also some special gaming keys that you'll notice above the display.

In addition, the device is pre-loaded with themed wallpapers, voice tones, animated screensavers and a full movie trailer.

Specs wise, the Get It Now-enabled Nokia 6205 The Dark Knight edition is identical to the original device and includes such features as 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, 58 MB of internal memory and a microSD memory slot. Supported services include VZ Navigator and Mobile Web.

Finally, in the Nokia 6205 The Dark Knight edition retail box, customers will also find a Joker playing card with a code and a link to the FightForGothamCity.com website, where they can play games to win more The Dark Knight-themed prizes, and download exclusive The Dark Knight content from Verizon's V CAST service.

Sony Ericsson Alicia leaked

It seems that Sony Ericsson are on a roll these days. Only two days after the impressive C905 photos and specifications leaked another phone’s demo video appeared online.

We are talking about a clamshell, nicknamed Alicia, which will probably join the Walkman lineup. It is armed with two external displays, one of which coming in the rather unusual circular shape. This unusual display also has touch-sensitive controls, resembling those of Sony Ericsson W980.

As of now there is very little information about the specifications of Alicia. Except for the displays we can see that the interface will come with the latest edition of the Sony Ericsson proprietary multimedia menu and that is pretty much all. We are waiting for an official announcement to tell whether the Alicia will be an upgrade to the Sony Ericsson W980 or its downgraded more affordable version.
